Q: Is this Mass in communion with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church?
A: Yes. St. Anthony Catholic Church is part of the Diocese of Great Falls-Blgs under the authority of Bishop Michael W. Warfel. We are one of the four parishes permited to offer the Traditional Latin Mass in the diocese.
Q: Do I need to know Latin to understand what’s going on?
A: No. Red Mass booklets are available in Latin and English, which have short explanations of what is going on so that you can follow along in your own language. The corresponding English text is on the opposite page from the Latin so you understand what is being said. Furthermore, the readings are often in English rather than Latin, and the homily is always in English.
Q: Do women need to wear a chapel veil?
A: It is no longer required by ecclesiastical law. Many women choose to cover their heads, but some do not. If you wish to, without getting a veil of your own, there are often veils in the Narthex for those who haven’t one with them. For more on the theology behind wearing a veil, read [HERE]
Q: I like to stand to receive Communion, do I have to kneel?
The priest turns toward the Lord ‘liturgical east’.
This is because of a long standing tradition heavily rooted in Scripture that tells us Christ will come again from the east. The priest does not give us his back; instead he humbly offers sacrifice and stands before God praying on our behalf.
The language spoken is the noble, universal language of the Roman Catholic Church. Latin dates back to the ealiest centuries of the church and the very masses offered in the Catacombs. [read more]
The silence of the Mass can be a bit uncomfortable at first.
Pope Benedict often spoke of the great need for sacred silence. ~
“We live in a society in which it seems that every space, every moment must be 'filled' with initiatives, activity, sound; often there is not even time to listen and dialogue. Dear brothers and sisters! Let us not be afraid to be silent outside and inside ourselves, so that we are able not only to perceive God's voice, but also the voice of the person next to us, the voices of others...Holiness, in fact, never loses its own power of attraction, it is not forgotten, it never goes out of fashion.”
